Synagogues

The majority of Jewish in Chernivtsi lived near the synagogue and trade squares, around this places appeared Jewish quarter, that was the most densely populated part of the city. In 1774, when Bukovina was passed to Austria, about 560 Jewish families lived in Chernivtsi. Jewish quarter was called Jewish city (Judenstadt). The main street of Jewish city was Synagogengrasse, where first synagogue in Chernivtsi was built (1710). Massive building started from the middle in XIX century when Jewish were allowed to buy land in the center of the city and build houses. Well-known in Europe Chernivtsi Temple – Choral Synagogue, Jewish house, Jewish nursing home, retirement home were built at that time.
